ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Both pieces are part of a series titled “Mujeres Poderosas”, which highlights women who are claiming their space, making bold moves to be heard, seen and celebrated.
Flor de Toloache -
This piece was created to show ways that women have taken on the roles traditionally set for men, and performed successfully. She is confident and powerful in her stance because she knows her ability and power.
The piece was partially inspired by the all female mariachi band “Flor de Toloache” They are a mixture of women from different Latino backgrounds with an afro-latina as one of the original founders. “I felt compelled to create a piece of a female mariachi with darker skin tones to show representation for the diverse mix of Latinas in music.
La Diosa de Oro - As a young girl, I often desired to take on roles that were designated for boys or men. I was called a tom-boy and often felt embarrassed by it, but I really liked the way their uniforms looked, and the power that came with their positions. I didn’t understand why women couldn’t or shouldn’t hold these positions.
As I grew older I realized the importance of doing what naturally suited me, even if it went against the expectations of society. This piece was created to showcase women who break through the traditional standards of gender roles and flourish.
