#STOP GENERAL IRON

Patagonia x NRDC, 2020/2021

ARTIST: SERGIO MACIEL CREATIVE DIRECTOR: SAM KIRK

Patagonia approached Provoke Culture with the mission of developing visually provocative artwork for their Lincoln Park and Magnificent Mile stores in Chicago. The concept and visuals were conceived and designed to attract attention to current issues of environmental and racial injustice happening in Chicago.

The artwork, created by Provoke Culture artist, Sergio Maciel, shares the stark difference in the quality of life that families on the north side of the city experience vs. the south side. A main goal of the artwork was to amplify Southeast Side Taskforce’s work on the General Iron campaign. General Iron is a scrap yard causing large amounts of pollution to its current home in Lincoln Park, recently they have decided to move to the South Side despite community pushback (and the already large amounts of pollution present in the neighborhood). SSCBP is working to shut down the factory before they move forward with the move.

In 2021, we also installed a mural of the artwork at a viaduct located at 103rd Street close to where the city is trying to move the scrap yard.
